Following their strong showing at the Canadian Championships, the London Runner Distance Club continued to roll with a great weekend in Windsor at the Ontario Senior Championships July 3-5, which also included the Ontario Junior Womens 5,000m and Ontario Distance Medley Relay Championships. Three club records were set by Junior athletes Ben Procter (800m), Jeremy Walsh (1500m), and Katie Anderson (5000m), who will all be heading out to Prince Edward Island for the Canadian Junior Championships July 17-19. Anderson also took the Ontario bronze medal in the Junior 5000m in her debut at this event, and was followed by club teammates Leslie and Laura Walker in 6th and 7th, respectively.
The top performance of the weekend went to Adrian Walton for successfully defending his Ontario 5000m title on Friday evening in a stellar race that was prominently featured the next day on the front page of the Windsor Star. The race played out very similar to his 2008 victory, the field set a very pedestrian pace early on before getting things going in the 2nd kilometer. Concerned about the strong kick of Kuternin from the Toronto Olympic Club, Walton took over with just under 2 laps to go and made a huge push for home. It turned out to be the correct decision, as Walton narrowly hung on for his 3rd Ontario Gold Medal in the past 14 months (2 x 5000m, 1 x 10000m). Teammate Kyle O'Neill followed up with a brave silver medal performance in the 3000m Steeplechase the next day, leading for most of the race before being out-kicked over the final 400m by CIS XC Champion Matt Brunsting. O'Neill set a PB and Club record with his 8:53.03 clocking - a mark that looks like it is just shy of the top-50 All-Time Canadian performances in that event. The club finished things up Sunday evening by capturing silver medals in the Ontario Junior Mens, Junior Womens, and Senior Mens Distance Medley Relays, making it a considerable medal haul.
Excited by the success of the past two weekends, the group is now looking to post some PBs at the July 10th LRDC-hosted London Series Finale track meet, after which the top 19 & Under athletes will be aiming towards the Canadian Junior and Canadian Youth Championships (August 8-9) that they have been focusing on all year. Be sure to also look for a large London Runner crew at the upcoming Summer Night 5k, hosted by Runners' Choice.
